Pease Development Authority, Port of New Hampshire, Main Wharf Rehabilitation
The Market Street Marine Terminal’s main wharf is a vital maritime link to the region and a generator of jobs and industry. The 50-plus years of service on the Piscataqua River has been tough on the concrete and steel structure. Plagued by deterioration, a portion of the wharf failed in 2011, and a 2017 inspection rated the structure in Poor condition with anticipated complete closure in 2022.
A $7,504,854 MARAD FY 2018 Build Grant award and a $5,003,235 State match extended a lifeline. By January 2022, a contract was awarded, and construction progressed over the next two years, with substantial completion at the beginning of 2024. Now fully operational, the facility is fully prepared to service the maritime needs of the region. How we did it
The approach toward the future involved repurposing the old sections of the wharf and bridging over an open water section with a new structure. This extended the existing structures’ service life and corrected an operational cargo handling challenge from the original construction. The project’s primary goals were achieved by closely monitoring the budget and identifying the most important elements of the project scope.
